United States Sales Tax Tokens and Stamps: A History and Catalog

This catalog provides a comprehensive and accurate listing of the sales tax tokens and related items that were used in a number of American states during the 1930s and early 1940s with some legal acceptance but little usage in the 1950s and early 1960s. To put these materials into their historical context, the book begins with an introductory chapter recounting the use of sales taxes in various times and places, with an emphasis on the advent of the sales tax tokens in the United States.

Since tokens were distributed and dispensed in packaging provided by the manufacturers, this catalog includes information about these wrappers and boxes. This packaging is collectible in its own right, but also printed wrappers and cartons provide important clues to the identity of manufacturers of various types of tokens.

This book also includes anti-tax exonumia such as anti-sales tax tokens and pinbacks as well as replicas, souvenir cards and tokens, personal tokens having some relationships to the field, and other relevant materials.

Tokens are listed in this catalog according to the state of issue with states arranged alphabetically. Anything related to a particular state appears int hat state's section of the book. Tokens that did not fit this approach were cataloged together in a concluding Miscellaneous chapter.
