Description

Benjamin Franklin: Printer, Statesman, Inventory, Philosopher, Scientist, Author, and Patriot; a leader in the flight for independence, a negotiator of treaties, and the signer of several of the documents that insured our independence.  His many accomplishments in these various areas have given medalists much subject matter over the years for a wide variety of medals in his honor.  Except for George Washington and possibly Abraham Lincoln no other personage from our early history has been honored so often on medals, tokens or paper money of this nation.

Those who have seen fit to do a medal honoring Franklin are a virtual Who's Who of distinguished sculptors and engravers.  Included are Jean Baptiste Nini, Augustin Dupre', Jean Martin Renuad, John Reich, Andrew McHench, Julio Kilenyi, R. Tait McKenzie, Christian Gobrecht, Augustus and Louis St. Gaudens, and Michael Iacocca.

The medallic honors to Franklin have been produced in a wide varity of compositions, from terra cotta to gold.  Several mints ahve contributed, include the Paris Mint and the US Mint in Philadelphia.  A number of private companies, such as Robbins, Green Duck, Bastian Brothers, Whitehead and Hoag, Medallic Art Company, and The Franklin Mint have produced a number of Franklin medallic pieces.

The book establishes a numbering system for the subject matter and exact descriptions and rarity are provided for each piece.  A black and white photo is provided for most pieces.
