The earliest known tokens from Washington, D.C. were issued during the Civil War era by a merchant who dealt in rubber goods. Within a couple of decades, tokens were being used by many firms, both as advertising cards and as trade tokens with redeemable value.
This book includes only tokens which were issued prior to the early 1960s. IT does not include transportation tokens since there are comprehensively cataloged elsewhere.
