Description
This book, published by the Sociedad Numismatica Dominicana, Inc. describes which coins specifically circulated on the Island of Puerto Rico during the period in which the island was conquered and colonized, both by the Spanish Empire and the United States of America, between 1508 and 1900. The circulation of coins at the time of the Colonization of the New World was somewhat complicated, due to the diversity of values ??in circulation in European countries, those produced in the mints of the new territories and the fluctuations in the value of the metals used. One chapter of this work deals with the problem that caused the change from the Spanish monetary system to the North American one, since each of them is based on different units, weights and purity of the metal, which caused disagreement with the population, when the North American authorities established the equivalence for the change. The author also deals with the first banknotes in circulation on that island, which are extremely scarce.
