Description
This book, written by the best known expert in the field, will provide an indispensable point of reference for students, curators, dealers and collectors as well as a ready source of information for historians and others with a more general interest in English medieval coins.
The twentieth century was a period of intense activity in English numismatics. This volume aims to meet the need for a new and readable survey of the subject that pulls the strands together, so as to enable the user to identify, classify and understand English coins of the later middle ages, in accordance with our up-to-date state of knowledge.
In addition to dealing with the technical numismatics of the series, the author has included a section on the mint accounts of each period, and a general historical and economic overview to put the coins in their context.
Ian Stewart, Lord Stewartby, was a banker by profession. From 1974 to 1992 he was also a Member of Parliament and held various offices in Government in the 1980s. As Economic Secretary to the Treasury he had ministerial responsibilities for monetary policy, coinage and the Royal Mint.
Having developed an interest in medieval coinage at a young age, he has written extensively on the subject for more than fifty years. His first book, on The Scottish Coinage, was published in 1955 when he was aged nineteen.
Lord Stewartby is now Honorary Keeper of Medieval Coins at the Fitzwilliam Museum; a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh; and medallist of the Royal and British Numismatic Societies.
In addition to dealing with the technical numismatics of the series, the author has included a section on the mint accounts of each period, and a general historical and economic overview to put the coins in their context. It features over 600 plates.
