Coins and the Bible
Purchase
Description
Some of the most famous stories in the Bible revolve around coins. From the widow's mite to Judas's thirty pieces of silver, the original narratives and their later translations have used local coins to make the Gospels relate to audiences over the ages. In turn, early Biblical writings have directly inspired the earliest artistic expression of the faith on coin designs.
This book was a joint project between The British Museum and Spinks and was designed to accompany the Coins and the Bible exhibition, organised by the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum. The book itself is divided into seven sections
- Money and the Old Testament
- Between the Testaments; the Herods
- Money and the Gospels
- The Downfall of Judaea
- Christian Dawn; and
- Constantine to the Christian Aftermath
The exhibition itself took place from the 17 May to 20 October 2013.
